In a heartfelt Instagram video, actress and devout Christian Candace Cameron Bure has condemned the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony for what many see as a blatant mockery of Christian beliefs. The ceremony, intended to celebrate the start of the Games, sparked outrage with what appeared to be a disrespectful rendition of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” featuring drag queens and transgender performers.
The controversial segment drew immediate criticism for its depiction of the iconic biblical scene where Jesus Christ shared a final meal with his disciples before his crucifixion. Critics argue that the portrayal, which included performers in a formation reminiscent of the Last Supper, was irreverent and inappropriate, especially with children present among the performers. Despite claims that the scene was inspired by Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, the resemblance to the Christian sacrament was unmistakable to many.
Adding to the controversy, the ceremony featured a bizarre reference to the Book of Revelation. A rider on a white horse, symbolizing death, paraded across the water amidst a pyrotechnic display, which many perceived as an unsettling twist on the apocalyptic imagery from the Bible.
Candace Cameron Bure, who has previously expressed support for the Olympic Games, took to social media to share her dismay. “Hi friends. So I didn’t really wanna weigh in on the Olympics opening ceremony publicly because… I always risk it becoming a headline. But it felt too important not to,” she began in her video.
Bure, whose husband has participated in the Olympic Games, described her deep love for the event and its celebration of athletic excellence. However, she was clear in her condemnation of the opening ceremony’s portrayal, calling it “disgusting” and “blasphemous.” She emphasized that such a prominent platform should not be used to mock or belittle Christian faith.
Turning to scripture, Bure offered encouragement to her fellow believers. “So what do we do with this? I want to continue, believers, with what Paul is saying here. He continues and says, ‘Let us not get tired of doing good. For we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.’”
Bure urged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and to actively share the gospel, even in the face of public scorn. She warned against complacency and encouraged believers to speak out against such offenses, while also stressing the importance of supporting Christian athletes participating in the Games. “It’s not the time, man. As far as the games go? Do what you want to do. You want to boycott? Boycott the games. I’m gonna watch the games. I want to support our athletes. There are a lot of great Christian athletes competing as well, but I want to cheer them on. I want to see God getting the glory. And I’m gonna watch,” she stated.
Bure’s remarks resonate as a call to action for those who feel conflicted about the controversy. She acknowledged that while the opening ceremony was offensive, the athletes themselves had no part in it and deserve support. For those who feel convicted not to watch, she advised respecting their own convictions while also standing firm in their faith. As the debate continues, Candace Cameron Bure’s bold stand serves as a reminder of the power of faith in navigating cultural conflicts and staying true to one’s beliefs amid widespread controversy.
