Michael Caine announces retirement from acting: ‘I might as well leave with all this’

“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now,” said the Oscar-winning actor.

Michael Caine is stepping away from the spotlight.

The two-time Oscar winner confirmed that he’s officially retiring from acting in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today show on Saturday. “I keep saying I’m going to retire,” he said. “Well, I am now.”

Caine explained that he feels ready to bid farewell to Hollywood following the success of his new critically acclaimed World War II drama, The Great Escaper.

“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews,” Caine said. “The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this — I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?'”

Michael Caine, a legendary actor known for his nearly 70-year career and over 130 film credits, recently shared his thoughts on aging, creativity, and the joys of writing. At 90 years old, Caine continues to challenge the traditional image of elderly characters in movies, stating that his experience of aging differs from what he once observed in older generations.

This perspective on staying active is part of why Caine has continued to work, although he has shifted his focus from acting to writing. His debut thriller novel, Deadly Game, set for release in November, came to fruition during the COVID-19 pandemic when film opportunities were scarce. Despite stepping away from acting, Caine expressed a newfound passion for writing, enjoying the freedom it offers compared to the demanding schedule of movie-making.

Though Caine hinted at retirement, he hasn’t fully closed the door on creative endeavors, planning to write more books in the future. His illustrious career, marked by accolades including two Oscars, three Golden Globes, a SAG award, and a BAFTA award, has left an indelible mark on cinema with memorable performances in films like The Dark Knight, Inception, The Italian Job, Interstellar, and many others.

Caine’s transition from the silver screen to writing reflects his desire to continue contributing creatively while embracing the natural changes that come with age.
